One of the biggest challenges for drivers or pilots is navigating environments with reduced situational awareness. Whether driving a car on the highway or taxiing, taking off, or landing an aircraft in an airspace, knowing what’s around is important. Human factors experts have long attempted to tackle this problem with different designs for the cockpit display system for cars and flying vehicles, focusing on aligning external markers such as lane tracking systems for modern cars, taxiway and runway centerline detection systems for aircraft and landing zone detection systems for helicopters.
In this talk, I will be presenting one of my works on simulating various weather conditions that affect visibility conditions and presenting works being done to improve situational awareness in the aviation sector, focusing mostly on interface designs for a Head-Up Display (HUD).
