In fall 2017, when Apple released ARKit and Google followed with ARCore, almost 1 Billion smartphones became Augmented Reality ready. Now we’re beginning to see the results: dramatic improvements to apps we use every day, like Google Maps and Snapchat. Meanwhile, the most humble form of wearable AR, the monocular microdisplay, is transforming enterprises around the world and making billions. VR, too, has powerful enterprise applications but among consumers it continues to struggle to finds its “AOL moment”, when the killer apps beyond games are immediately apprehensible to everyone.
