VR for Immersive Robotic Control

Cyborgs vs androids is a debate which is bound to play out in robotics in the future. Is it better to have a fully autonomous system, or a human-robot hybrid? The answer depends on the task at hand, as there will always be a scenario where we want or need a person to take direct control of a robot.

VR is the closest we’ve come to being able to transport a person’s consciousness into a virtual world; into a virtual body. As opposed to trying to convey information about the robot’s environment why not put the pilot, virtually, into the body of the robot and let them see everything for themselves? Let them, through the VR interface, interact with the real environment of the robot? This talk will provide an overview of teleoperated robotics and the application of VR technology to human-robot interfaces.
