Manimal Sanctuary: Dev Notes from a Lurking Simulator

Manimal Sanctuary is a lurking simulator set on Toronto island after a Lovecraftian apocalypse. This talk by designer Jim Munroe and developer Jason Bond will share some of their learnings in developing this “slow VR” prototype, such as: growing dread, not jump scares; the trouble with procedural tentacles; the real VR nausea; stepping away from the bleeding edge; and it’s not flailing, it’s swimming.

Jim Munroe (b. 1972) is a “pop culture provocateur” according to the Austin Chronicle, and an “independent press icon” to Time Out Chicago. Primarily he is an indie culture maker in various mediums: post-Rapture graphic novels, lo-fi sci-fi feature movies, and award-winning text adventure videogames. He’s also helped found and run various arts organizations such as The Hand Eye Society, an incorporated videogame culture not-for-profit. http://nomediakings.org

Jason Bond is an indie creator with nearly a decade of experience in game design and augmented & virtual reality development. He takes special interested in procedurally-generated digital worlds and interactive storytelling, and enjoys working in the places where science and art intersect.
